True Love Waits
We were high school sweethearts, the year 1963-1964. I was 16 and Joel was 18.
The Vietnam war was just getting in the news. Joel enlisted in the Army 2 months after his 18th birthday. We talked about getting married when he came home on his first leave, but that has been too many years for me to remember why it didn't happen. Then the next year we talked again, and it still didn't happen. Long story short, it just never happened in our young years.
We both went on and married other people, but we kept in touch with each other for over 45 years. Then in 2009 a High School Alumni Book came out. By then my husband had passed away, and so did Joel's wife. He was the first person I looked up,and I was the first he looked up.
One phone call, we made arragements to meet in our hometown. He was going to visit his mother who by then was in the nursing home, and it was also the anniversary of my mother's death. I always went to cemetery to put flowers out. We met, sat down and talked all that night.
That was April 20, 2009. He was and still is the love of my life, our timing was just off by about 45 years. We married on Jan 11, 2011 at 11:00 am and yes, true love waits!
